Peppol for Shopify: what it is and how to connect your store

Last updated 26 July 2026

If you sell B2B from Shopify in the EU, you'll keep running into one word: Peppol. It's the network your business customers — and a growing list of governments — increasingly expect your invoices to travel over. This is a plain-English explainer: what Peppol actually is, why it matters for a Shopify store, and what it takes to connect.

What is Peppol, really

Peppol is a network for exchanging electronic business documents — most often e-invoices — in a standardised, machine-readable format. Instead of emailing a PDF (which is just a picture of an invoice), a business sends a structured e-invoice that follows the European standard EN 16931, in the Peppol BIS Billing 3.0 profile. The receiver's software reads it directly — no re-typing, no OCR.

Crucially, you don't "log in to Peppol." It works on a four-corner model: you (corner one) hand your invoice to your Access Point (corner two); it routes over the network to your buyer's Access Point (corner three), which delivers it to your buyer (corner four). Access Points are the certified providers that actually connect to the network — a bit like email servers passing a message between two addresses.

In one line: Peppol is a standard invoice format plus a secure delivery network. Get on it once, and you can send compliant e-invoices to any business on the network across the EU.

Why a Shopify merchant should care

Two forces are pushing EU B2B sellers onto Peppol:

A paper or PDF invoice from Shopify won't satisfy either for long. That's the gap Peppol fills.

Can Shopify connect to Peppol on its own?

No. Shopify is excellent at taking orders, but it has no native Peppol support. Out of the box it can't:

Those capabilities are added with an app or service that sits between your store and the Peppol network.

How a Shopify store actually connects

You don't apply to Peppol directly — you connect through a certified Access Point, typically via a Shopify app. The flow looks like this:

StepWhat happens
1 · CaptureCollect the buyer's company details, VAT number and Peppol ID at checkout or in the order — the data a compliant invoice needs.
2 · GenerateTurn the Shopify order into a structured EN 16931 (UBL) e-invoice, with the VAT calculated correctly for the buyer's country.
3 · ValidateCheck the buyer's VAT number against VIES and confirm the invoice passes EN 16931 validation before anything is sent.
4 · SendTransmit the invoice over a certified Peppol Access Point to the buyer's Access Point.
5 · TrackFollow the delivery and acceptance status — Peppol delivery is asynchronous — and surface it back in the Shopify admin.

The part everyone underestimates: VAT correctness

A Peppol invoice is validated. If the numbers don't add up to the cent — net, VAT and gross — it can be rejected, and a rejected invoice that was legally required is a failed sale. Pulling clean figures out of Shopify is trickier than it looks: whether your prices include or exclude tax changes how net and VAT are derived, rounding can leave you a cent off, and selling to a VAT-registered business in another EU country usually means reverse charge (0% VAT with the correct legal note). Getting on the network is only half the job — the numbers have to be right too.

Frequently asked questions

What is Peppol?

A pan-European network for exchanging electronic business documents — mostly e-invoices — in a standardised format (Peppol BIS Billing 3.0, based on EN 16931). Certified Access Points route documents between sender and receiver.

Does Shopify support Peppol out of the box?

No. Shopify can't generate a compliant e-invoice, identify a buyer by Peppol ID, or send over the network. You add that with an app that connects to a certified Access Point.

How does a Shopify store connect to Peppol?

Through a certified Access Point, usually via a Shopify app: capture the buyer's VAT and Peppol ID, generate an EN 16931 invoice, send it over an Access Point, and track its status in the admin.

What is a Peppol ID?

A participant identifier that addresses a business on the network — often based on a VAT or company number. You need the buyer's Peppol ID to send them an invoice over Peppol.

Do I have to use Peppol, or can I just email an e-invoice?

It depends on the country and the buyer. Some mandates fix the format but allow email delivery; Peppol is the most widely accepted channel across the EU, so being on it keeps you compatible everywhere.
